Williams new gearbox damper layout
The new Williams gearbox\suspension uses a Ferrari\McLaren like torsion bar damper layout. That is longitudinal torsion bars, with damper set in a niche in the top of the gearbox, a third damper running over the top between the two links and an Anti Roll Bar operating off the rockers. The old design uses coil over springs operated by rockers, with third damper placed behind the rockers and the ARB even further behind the rockers (Hence the bulge in the engine cover). This "old" design was on the car when it ran at the cars launch and has been seen the first two GPs of 2003.
Williams have raised the level of sophistication of the FW25 since its launch, with improved aero and a neater damper layout (I don’t believe the actual gearbox was different). It is fair to say recent Williams have been workhorses, putting in good lap times without the need for exotic design work, how much of their pace has been down to Williams and not tyres or BMWs engine is debateable.
